AmFam HS Play of the Year Nominees: Girls and Boys Semifinals
EIGHT TOTAL PLAYS...TWO GIRLS AND TWO BOYS...BY THE END OF IT ALL, WE WILL HAVE A PLAY OF THE YEAR TO CROWN.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR)–Here is how this works: Eight total plays from the 2023-24 High School sports seasons across North Dakota and Minnesota. Four girls plays and four boys plays (decided by the sports department, in accordance with our play of the week nominees throughout the year). After each semifinal and final rounds are complete, we will crown the American Family Insurance High School Girls and Boys plays of the year. In the final week, the girls and boys final play will battle each other for the ultimate crown.
Girls Semifinals:
No. 1:
In our first semifinal, two Grand Forks Red River sports battle it out. First, on the hardwood. Red River vs. West Fargo Horace in the EDC championship. Hannah Litzinger gets an opening in the corner, down 2 points, and with ice in her veins, nails the game winner to give the Roughriders the East No. 1 seed at state.
In play number two, it is the Red River softball team. Mya Mannausau comes away with a a spectacular grab to record the out (#WebGem).
No. 2:
In the other semifinal, we go back to the West Fargo Winter Classic. Sydney Dye for WF United gets the nickname Ms. Dangles for this one. She beats the Knightriders keeper for the goal with spectacular stick work.
That play goes up against another softball play. Fargo north is battling Devils Lake. The ball gets passed the catcher, but no need to fear, Kenleigh Fischer is here. Fischer gets herself back into the play after retrieving the ball and applies the tag at the plate to record the out.
Boys Semifinals:
No. 1:
To the boys now. In semifinal number one, we call this a SEM-sational slam. Jeremiah Sem for Fargo North goes up stairs for the poster dunk in the Class 2-A state championship.
That play is going up against our most recent play of the week winner on the baseball diamond. Sacred Heart in the section 8A title game. Nick Satterlund tracks the ball beautifully and dives for the catch in right field.
No. 2:
In the other semifinal, our football representative is Fargo North. In the play, they are taking on Grand Forks Central. The Knights are punting and the hand of Carter Zeller blocks the punt for north. The ball ends in the lap of Xzavier Buckmiller and he’s off to the races. Every lineman’s dream is to score a touchdown, and Buckmiller lived it. He takes it 50-yards to the endzone.
That play goes up against…State Hockey. Grand Forks Central on the right side of the play this time. A full ice pass from Evan Panzer to the stick of Mack Blue and Blue does the rest in front of the keeper for the goal.
