Avoiding heat-related illnesses

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — With summer in full swing and our temperatures rising, people are at a higher risk of heat related illnesses.

Essentia Health says that during these high summer temperatures they see more cases of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

People who ignore the early signs of heat exhaustion, can end up needing a trip to the hospital.

The keys to avoiding heat-related illnesses are to stay hydrated and listen to the cues that your body is giving you.

“Avoid things that can dehydrate you, like alcohol, certain medications can predispose you to dehydration, things like diuretics. So you have to be mindful of those even with good hydration. You still can’t experience heat-related illness. You know you can get heat exhaustion and heat stroke.”

It’s also important to wear high SPF sunscreen and reapply it regularly to avoid sun burns and damage to your skin.
