Wahpeton Man Will Serve 5 Years in Prison For Fatal Hit-and-Run Last October

WAHPETON, N.D. (KVRR/KFGO) — A judge sentences 53-year-old Chad Olson of Wahpeton to serve five years in prison in the hit-and-run death of Bailey Bernstein.

Olson changed his pleas to guilty to criminal vehicular homicide and duty in accident involving death before sentencing.

District Court Judge Bradley Cruff gave him 10 years on each count to be served at the same time and then said he would only have to serve five years in prison and five years on probation.

Olson was driving a truck under the influence of alcohol when he hit the 20-year-old Bernstein last October while walking with her mother.

Olson spoke in court and apologized and said he knows he can’t take back his actions.

A scholarship fund has been set up for Bailey, and donations can be sent to Bell Bank in Wahpeton.
