UPDATE: Teen Stole Handgun Before Showing Up At Moorhead High School Career Academy

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — A Moorhead High School Career Academy student showed up on campus this morning with a handgun.

A 25-year-old man called police to tell them a 17-year-old male had just taken the gun from the bedroom of his apartment in the 500 block of 32nd Avenue South.

A short time later, the teen was seen in the Career Academy building.

Officers located him and took him into custody without incident around 10:25 a.m.

The handgun was in a bag and never pulled out and there were no known threats made.

The teen is being held at Clay County Regional Detention Center and could face charges of theft, possession, and bringing the handgun into a school.

The unsecured gun left in the apartment could also result in charges.

MOORHEAD (KFGO) – Moorhead Area Public Schools says it took immediate action in response to a notification from the Moorhead Police Department regarding a potential threat involving a student at the Moorhead High School Career Academy on Monday morning.

A statement from the district says that while the student was not initially present on campus, school staff remained vigilant and on alert. Upon the student’s arrival, the student was immediately apprehended at approximately 10:25 a.m. It was confirmed that the individual was in possession of a firearm. Thanks to the swift and coordinated efforts of school staff and law enforcement, the situation was promptly resolved without incident.

“We are grateful for the rapid response and collaboration between our staff and law enforcement,” said Superintendent Dr. Brandon Lunak. “The safety, security and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priorities, and we are proud of the systems and protocols in place to address situations like this effectively.”
