Neighbors Speak Out Against Proposed Sex Offender Treatment Facility in South Fargo
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — A potential sex offender treatment center is facing pushback and controversy in Fargo.
Not because of what it would do, but where it could end up.
STAND Sex Offender Treatment facility is planned for the former Cornerstone Bank building on South University Drive.
Neighbors have raised concerns and questions of the location because it would be close to the YWCA, three elementary schools and other child care centers.
Many people shared their opinions over the proposed facility during a gathering at The Bowler.
Most of them are against it being opened near places where kids gather.
“So thankful for everyone who showed up tonight to advocate for their own kids, to advocate for their community. It’s a Blessing to see all these people here and it showcases the amount of passion that they have to making our neighborhood great,” said Trisha Pearson, a community organizer.
“It doesn’t make any sense to put people that are struggling with this sort of a problem around children that would be a temptation to them,” said State Rep.-Elect Desiree Morton, a Fargo Republican.
STAND filed a permit with the city to remodel the former bank building across the street from The Bowler in October.
It’s still awaiting approval.
