The 22-1 Spuds Boy’s Hockey Team Preps for Final Stretch of Regular Season

AFTER FALLING IN THEIR FIRST GAME OF THE SEASON, MOORHEAD HAS RATTLED OFF 22-STRAIGHT WINS.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) –In Minnesota high school boy’s hockey the Moorhead Spuds are the team to beat. Moorhead has not lost since the opening game of the season. The result of that success is a current 22-game win streak.

Throughput the win streak the Spuds have beaten the best of the best. Eleven of their wins are over teams currently ranked in the top-15 of the “Let’s play hockey” poll. Although the win streak is a talking point for fans, the team says they do not worry about it and their main focus remains: winning Moorhead their first ever state championship.

“I don’t think we’ve even really talked about the streak, honestly,” said senior forward Mason Kraft. “We kind of just go out there and play hockey and have fun. We’re all super close and we all love each other like brothers, so it’s been a great year.

Senior captain, Brooks Cullen, shared the same message.

“It kind of doesn’t really come to mind a lot,” said Cullen. “For us, it’s kind of just focus on the next game and play our game and get a win. That’s kind of just how it’s been since that first loss, but it’s pretty cool when you look at it and recognize it.”

The Spuds last played on February 1. They will not take the ice again vs. an opponent until February 13. The long break is unique and something Moorhead is taking full advantage of.

“Touching up on some details, you know, that sometimes get away from you throughout the season,” said head coach Jon Ammerman. “Also able to maybe rest some bruises and bumps that we’ve had along the way. But we’re hoping that our finish is really strong. Obviously, we have a couple of really strong opponents and we’re looking forward to it, but taking advantage of hopefully attacking some details here.”

Mason Kraft is a Minnesota State-Mankato commit and sits third in the state in points with 68 entering Thursday. He added, “It is a little bit different for sure than years past but it’s good to just have like a week of you know practicing and getting better and obviously resting a little bit.”

Brooks Cullen is a Michigan State commit. He added, “I would say it’s helpful for us. We kind of had a long stretch of a good amount of games in a row, so to kind of have this little break from games, I feel like it’s going to help us in the long run.”

The spuds close out the regular season with two tough opponents. On February 13 they will host 3rd-ranked Rogers. To close the regular season they will battle 4th-ranked Hill-Murray on the road on February 15.

The Section 8AA tournament is slated to begin February 18 with the title game on February 26.
