Former Senator Heidi Heitkamp: Tariffs are ‘a solution in search of a problem’

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Former U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp calls the tariffs “a solution in search of a problem.”

As North Dakota relies on its trading relationship with Canada, Heitkamp sees that it will impact many in the agricultural community.

She points out that this move has created a rift between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Canada has stated they will enforce retaliatory tariffs leaving many in North Dakota wondering what comes next.

“America’s great strength has been it’s reliable alliances. Whether that’s in the national security or whether that’s trade alliances. And we’re disrupting all of those reliable alliances right now. And you could say well move quickly and break things and put them back together. Some things may not be able to be put back together,” said Heidi Heitkamp, Former U.S. Senator North Dakota.

Heitkamp is on the board of advisors at the University of Chicago Institute of Politics.
