Political ads may have to add disclaimer if AI is used to impersonate real people
BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — Makers of political ads could be forced to run a disclaimer any time they use artificial intelligence to create impersonations of people.
The bill in the North Dakota legislature covers all video, audio, and still images impersonating someone with the use of AI.
Producers must use the words, “This content generated by Artificial Intelligence”.
The bill doesn’t specify where or for how long in a video the disclaimer must be visible.
It also has exceptions for things like enhancing existing content, stylistic editing and grammatical corrections.
“Really, this is focused on graphics, videos, audio, text that visually or audibly impersonates someone. So, the original version was a little broad and if you ran some of your content through ChatGPT, which many of us have done, that that became a problem. So, we’ve refined the language,” said Rep. Jonathan Warrey (R-Casselton).
The amended version of the bill was written with the help from the Technology Council of North Dakota.
The committee took no further action.
