Update: One dead, another in critical condition after shooting outside Twin Cities school

UPDATE (Fox 9) – In a phone call on Tuesday, Jordan Kushner, an attorney for Twin Cities activist Cortez Rice tells FOX 9 the boy killed in Richfield was the son of his client.

Rice is being held in jail, accused of threatening Judge Regina Chu during a protest ahead of the Kim Potter trial. Kushner says he plans to argue for Rice’s release in the wake of his son’s death during an already scheduled court hearing Wednesday morning.

A Richfield football coach also confirmed to FOX 9 the identity of the victim.

Police have not released any details about the victims of the shooting besides the fact they were students.

RICHFIELD, Minn. – Police say one student is dead and another is in critical condition following a shooting outside a suburban Minneapolis school.

Richfield Police Chief Jay Henthorne said the students were shot about 12:07 p.m. outside South Education Center. He said the surviving student was in critical condition at a local hospital.

Henthorne says suspects fled and police searched the area.

District 187 Superintendent Sandra Lewandowski said the students were shot near the school’s front entrance. She said parents and students were being reunited Tuesday afternoon.

South Education Center has about 200 students, according to its website, which describes it as a school that offers special education programs and an alternative high school, with students as young as prekindergarten.
