Moorhead Baseball Eyes State Tournament Appearance

THE SPUDS ENDED 2024 ONE GAME SHORT OF STATE, THIS SEASON THEY LOOK TO PUSH THROUGH THAT BARRIER.

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) –Moorhead athletics has been on a roll. From football, hockey and basketball, the spuds are among the best in the state. This spring, baseball looks to continue that success while building off their own 2024 campaign.

“After last year falling short in the section championship, everyone wants to get back and win the section championship this year,” said senior Drake Kunza. “We’ve been talking about it all off season. So, that’s the goal for this team this year.”

The Spuds are eager and ready to build upon last season’s section runner-up performance. Moorhead ended last season with a 14-10 record, and like every team they lost a few talents to graduation. But the belief is there the underclassman can fill their shoes and then some.

“You know, losing Carter Heinsch and Cullen Wilson, those are some key impact players,” said head coach Greg Salvevold. “Some of these young players coming up are going to hopefully fill their place and we will have some success this year.”

One of those underclassman, sophomore Taye Reich, says the team is doing everything they can to achieve that main goal of making state this season.

“Without practice, we’re not a team,” said Reich. “The seven P’s, it’s: proper prior preparation prevents piss poor performance. A lot of that is recognizing pitches. It’s all the communication skills that we need to communicate in the infield and knowing the signs. And the biggest thing for me is the whole team goal is win sections. So, that’s really what I want.”

Weather permitting, the Spuds will open the season Tuesday in West Fargo battling Sheyenne.

“We’re excited, man,” said senior Carter Huotari. “The weather lets us get out there. We’re excited to get back on the field. We’re excited to produce some wins. A lot of big games this year.”
