Central Cass Softball Aims to Return to Championship Glory

THE SQUIRRELS HAVE WON SIX STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS, THE MOST IN CLASS B SOFTBALL HISTORY, BUT HAVE NOT WON SINCE 2022.

CASSELTON, N.D. (KVRR) – Central Cass Softball is nothing short of a dynasty in Class B. The Squirrels defeated Hillsboro-Central Valley to punch their ticket to state as Region 1 champions.

Winning is the expectation at Central Cass.  Excluding the Covid year, since 2012, the Squirrels have reached the State tournament every year but once. They have won it all six times with the last being in 2022.

A season ago they fell short in the title game to rival Kindred/Richland. This year, they have their sights set on redemption to capture championship number seven.

“They have a little bit of a bad taste in their mouth from last year,” said head coach Scott Kost. “So, I do think that that helps. I think that’s created a lot of drive for a lot of girls that stay after practice every night. They just keep working and working and working at it because they’re very, very motivated right now to not finish second again. They want to finish on top this time, and so we’ll see what happens.”

Junior catcher Aspyn Prien added, “It’s our revenge tour., So, I think that’s really fueling us. I mean, we haven’t forgot about it, but we’ve definitely learned from it. Now we’re ready to hopefully get another one. A lot of these girls know what it’s like to be a champion, and I think that’s really helping us. I think we just want to go out there and play our game, and whatever happens, happens.”

Central Cass begins their title run against Carrington.

The entire Class B softball tournament will be played at Tharaldson Park in Fargo. The tournament begins Thursday, May 29, and finishes Saturday, May 31.
