City of Fargo Moves Property Tax Exemption Application Online

The exemption applies to any property 25 years old or older on which a renovation is being performed.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Property owners in the City of Fargo now have an easier way to apply for an exemption from property taxes.

The exemption can apply to anyone who is performing a renovation on their home, apartment building, or business, if that structure is 25 years old or older.

However much the renovation raises the value of your property – that assessment will be withheld from your property taxes for five years.

In the past, you had to fill out a paper application for this exemption, but now the process has been digitized on the City of Fargo’s website.

The city says they hope the exemption incentivizes people to maintain their property.

“It’s an incentive to encourage them to upgrade or maintain their homes,” explained city assessor Mike Splonskowski, “and also to keep that pride of ownership and that mentality.”

The exemption is also transferrable – meaning, if you renovate your property and then sell in that five-year window, the credit is applied to the new owner.
