With the weekend behind us, all three institutions of higher education in the F-M area are set to begin the new school year.

FARGO, N.D. and MOORHEAD, MN – It was a weekend full of excitement, anticipation, and bittersweet goodbyes for parents and students in the F-M area.

Following MSUM’s move-in day on Thursday, NDSU and Concordia followed suit on Saturday and Sunday.

NDSU went first, on August 23. Students were given half-hour blocks in which to arrive so as to minimize congestion.

Those slots were available from 8 A.M. to 1 P.M.

In addition, both dining centers on campus had a $10 lunch deal for students and families so they could stay fueled up during the move-in process.

Residence Life staff say that witnessing that spectrum of emotions is what makes the job rewarding.

“I like seeing the range of emotions, because then I know it matters to our families,” said Rian Nostrum, Director of Residence Life for NDSU. “You see some that are really excited, some that are kinda sad, but seeing that range just reinforces why we do what we do.”

Parents were asked to say their goodbyes by 3:30 as NDSU’s student-only Welcome Week activities began at 4.

Then it was Concordia College’s turn on August 24.

Campus staff and volunteers helped incoming and current Cobbers find their dorm assignments and move in their belongings.

Concordia President Dr. Colin Irvine was on campus meeting students and even filming TikTok videos.

He said the school always aims to create a welcoming environment.

“Just a tone of optimism, expectation – we’re expecting a great year, a lot of good energy and a lot of great momentum,” said Irvine.

After move-in was complete, the primary activity of the day was Blessing the Journey, a religious service specifically designed for incoming students.
