Sons of Norway kick off festivities to celebrate Norwegian heritage

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Festivities kick off at the Sons of Norway, bringing in many traditional Norwegian dishes, crafts, lefse, and more.

“So the Taste of Norway is kind of one of our heritage festivals. We’ve got a spread of different Norwegian cuisines, ranging from lingonberry meatballs we’ve got klub. The dessert side we’ve got kransekake, krumkake, kind of all the Norwegian specialities,” said Jacob Dauner, Food and Beverage at Sons of Norway.

Many of the dishes that are being served throughout the week are typical dishes that are served once a year during the holiday. But this has brought many to come out and give it a try.

“We’re both of Norwegian ancestry. So rømmegrøt is what we came for. Rømmegrøt is a Norwegian food that is served mostly in the wintertime, because it’s served hot. It only has about four, maybe five ingredients to it. And it just not only warms the soul, but warms the tummy as well,” said Les Bakke.

Both Bakke and Bev Like traveled from southern Arizona to visit the Sons of Norway to rekindle with friends and celebrate in this week’s Heritage Week.

“It really is just all about preserving the heritage. It also gives a really good reason for families to get together, and just the stories that are exchanged from different generations is wonderful,” said  Dauner.

As the week continues, there will be different dishes, crafts, and music to celebrate the Norwegian heritage. Preparing for the anniversary dinner that will be held this Sunday.
