People traveling between Grand Forks and East Grand Forks will no longer have to wait their turn to cross the river.

City and county officials including the Minnesota and North Dakota DOT celebrated the completion of the newly rehabilitated Sorlie Memorial Bridge.

The 86-year-old bridge has been under construction for much of the summer, and is now in top condition to safely support the 14 thousand cars that travel across it each day.

City officials say the project was vital in order to keep downtown thriving.

“But I think that our downtowns are so vibrant now, people still came downtown to eat and do activities like that so I think we reached a threshold where people want to be downtown. And this really facilitates the transportation back and forth,” says Mayor of Grand Forks Micheal Brown.

The $4.6 million project included improvements such as new paint and LED lighting.
