A new fresh hair cut isn’t always at the top of 8–year–old Aden’s to do list.
“You just don’t get it that often. It’s kind of like a one day, one try and you just have to come here and just do it,” says Aden.
So a free hair cut is a nice incentive.
Thanks to Salvation Army and Josef’s School of Hair Design kids were sporting styles from faux-hawks to big blow outs beating those back to school blues.
“Kids come in with a very ‘oh man I’m gonna get my hair cut I really don’t want to be here,’ and then all the sudden when they come out after getting their hair cut they’re smiling and they look great,” says Major Byron Medlock, Fargo Salvation Army Administrator.
Carroll Minton’s family is new in town…
“Not knowing anybody coming into a new area, it’s nice to build your self esteem with a new haircut, a new image that type of thing,” says Minton.
And for her 10-year-old daughter Ester, a new haircut is quite the treat.
“Usually mom trims it so getting a new haircut is really kind of exciting.” says Minton.
“It’s expected 300 kids to come through the salon here today and nearly 60 cosmetology students are making that happen.”
Josef’s students must complete 1800 hours of training.
“The students themselves really love this part of their training because the fact that it gives them the opportunity to give back to the community as well as they really enjoy the interaction of the school aged children,” says Kelli Karn, student services director at Josef’s Hair.
And the kids enjoy it too. Beating those back to school blues, one haircut at a time.
