A local forecaster who predicted the weather for 40 years for the weather service and on radio, has passed away.
KFGO’s Terry Spies died Monday night after a sudden heart attack.
Jack Sunday is reading from a plaque that sat on longtime forecaster Terry Spies’ desk.
The airwaves at KFGO now have one less voice.
It’s a voice that went into the homes of many in the valley.
Terry Spies came into work Monday ready to do the weather like any other day when he had a sudden heart attack.
Coworkers performed CPR and managed to revive him, but he later passed away.
“A lot of heavy hearts here. I mean, many of us have worked with Terry for many years,” said News Director Paul Jurgens.
Spies desk sits empty after almost two decades at KFGO.
His news director says he never got to read his final forecast.
“He was just one of those people who loved weather,” said Jurgens.
Spies’ career spans decades in the area and his coworkers say he had a big impact in the community and they’re not the only ones who are going to miss him.
“Not only was he a member of the KFGO family, but we as listeners felt like Terry was a part of our family,” said Sunday.
Spies helped forecast the weather during the big Fargo floods of 1997 and 2009.
“Former Mayor Walaker, during flood times would often talk to Terry, he would call directly into the weather service, the weather center here at KFGO,” said Jurgens.
This is Spies performing one of the classic cold weather experiments back in 2010.
It’s a face… and a voice many will never forget.
The funeral is scheduled for 10 A.M. on Saturday at Faith Lutheran Church in West Fargo.
