Detroit Mountain Trails Officially Open

The slippery slopes of Detroit Mountain may have melted away, but they’re now home to some new biking and hiking trails.
Cyclists are hitting the slopes of Detroit Mountain as they officially open their new biking and hiking trails.
Tony Kramer allowed us to use his helmet to get some video of the new trails.
He recently started mountain biking and is excited that it’s so close to where he lives.
“It’s going to draw in people from that Fargo, West Fargo area. You don’t get hills and mountains like this in the Red River Valley,” said Kramer of West Fargo.
There are 11 cross country trails over a five mile span, and the goal is to expand to 25 to 35 miles in the future.
“We made it happen, it’s here. Let’s just play, have fun and get the wheels moving, it will be good,” said Rental Manager/Trails Boss Tony Schmitz.
Hunter Schleske and his wife love to be outdoors and say the trails are an exciting addition.
“It’s just nice to have an extra opportunity to be able to ride in more places, for sure, especially with the local access,” said Schleske of Fargo.
There’s even a skills park where people can practice with ease.
Detroit Mountain officials are so excited about opening up the trails; they brought in a sports legend.
Gary Fisher is one of the pioneers of mountain biking.
He says the sport is an opportunity for people to live healthier lives.
“This exercise is a lot of fun and you can bring your kids. Think about it, there are very few sports you can do with a teenager or a young kid,” said Fisher.
It’s one of the reasons Kramer started riding.
“Out of college and into a full time career and I go to work, I go to sleep and I go back to work. Not much fitness,” said Kramer.
It’s a mountain where people can have fun during all four seasons.
Three new downhill trails opened Saturday and an advanced trail will be opening next week.
