UND Dominates Quinnipiac en route to West Region Final
Well any rust that the UND Hockey team had following an unsuccessful weekend at the NCHC Frozen Face-off was erased quickly, as the green and white dominated Quinnipiac en route to a 4-1 victory in the NCAA West Region semifinals.
UND started the scoring about halfway through the first period when Tucker Poolman (Fr./East Grand Forks, MN) sent a shot on goal that found the back of the net, thanks in large part to the work Steph Pattyn (Sr./Ste. Anne, Manitoba) did in front.
The green and white added to the scoring in the second when Bryn Chyzyk (Jr./Virden, Manitoba) scored from a near impossible angle, virtually behind the red line. It was Chyzyk’s first goal since Jan. 24th, and also came in the home of his former team, the Fargo Force.
UND then stretched the lead on a short handed goal from Drake Caggiula (Jr./Whitby, Ontario). Caggiula was set up on a beautiful cross ice pass from Troy Stecher (So./Richmond, BC), who had created the odd-man rush from his defense position. Luke Johnson (So./Grand Forks, N.D.) added a short handed empty netter to seal the victory.
UND goaltender Zane McIntyre (Jr./Thief River Falls, MN), also playing in his former USHL arena, made 29 saves to pace the green and white defense.
UND advances to play St. Cloud State in the region final on Saturday, after the Huskies erased a 2-1 Michigan Tech deficit in the final minute of regulation, before scoring in overtime to win the game.
Puck drop is scheduled for 8:00 P.M. at Scheels Arena, and the game can be seen on ESPNU.
