Sweeney to Serve as UND Football Voice Next Season
University of North Dakota athletics director Brian Faison announced on Tuesday that veteran sports broadcaster Pat Sweeney will serve as the play-by-play radio voice for the football program during the 2015 season. Sweeney will join color commentator Mike Berg and sideline reporter Paul Ralston to form the team calling the games on the Home of Economy Radio Network.
“We are excited to have Pat join our football radio broadcast team for the 2015 season,” Faison said. “He is a well-respected veteran in the industry and we are looking forward to having him call the games this season.”
Sweeney will add the play-by-play responsibilities to his current role as the Videographer and Community Relations Coordinator for the Division of University and Pulbic Affairs at UND. He took that position in 2014 after wrapping up a 32-year stint as the sports director at WDAZ in Grand Forks.
During his award-winning stint at WDAZ, he also served as the play-by-play voice for UND’s televised football, hockey and basketball games for 28 years and was the host/producer of the UND football coach’s show for 20 seasons. Sweeney did radio play-by-play work as well during the 1992 football season.
Sweeney takes over for Jack Michaels, who resigned from his post as the play-by-play voice due to an increase in job duties for his primary employer, Midwest Communications. Sweeney’s first game behind the microphone will be Saturday, Sept. 5 as UND opens the 2015 season at Wyoming.
