Open Hearts, Open Homes: Hillsboro Offering Low Income Housing
They have rooms, and they want people who need a home to have them.
Helping hands in Hillsboro wants to offer the elderly and disabled more affordable housing options.
The need for low-incoming housing in the Fargo-Moorhead area is outgrowing the supply.
Forty miles away, a non-profit group is reaching out and wants to help people get a permanent roof over their heads.
Rochelle Beck has a surprising amount of vacancies at the Hillsboro Development Authority.
At least a dozen of the group’s 54 apartments are currently open.
“We just want to let people know that we are here. We’re available,” Beck says.
Low income housing is in high demand, according to officials with Churches United for Homeless.
Their shelter is filled to capacity nightly.
“Typical of us to have 100 people a night. We’re turning away people, families, and single people daily,” says Lisa Lipari with Churches United.
For senior citizens and people with disabilities with little money, a home could be waiting for them in Hillsboro.
You don’t even need an income to get help from the Hillsboro Development Association.
A one bedroom apartment like this could cost someone in need as little as $25 a month.
Beck adds, “Usually we ask for the $25, but we understand that some people don’t have that kind.”
If you move to Hillsboro, your neighbors will be excited to meet you.
Audrey Knudson has lived here for six years. The care she gets here keeps her living as independently as possible.
Knudson explains, “As soon as this limb goes, my shoulder, then I will be in a nursing home. But they’re keeping me out as long as they can.”
She says it’s a fun group that lives here. They’re excited for more potential neighbors to come check it out.
“A lot of people have come back,” she adds,
That’s why the group is reaching out.
“Let them know that we’re here and we can certainly try and help however we can,” says Beck.
Prospective tenants have to pass a background check before they can move into the apartments.
