Heitkamp Addresses Fargo Commission On Opioid Epidemic

Senator Heidi Heitkamp says communities across the state need to pull together to address the opioid epidemic.

Heitkamp made her case at this evening’s Fargo City Commission meeting.

Heitkamp discussed the Comprehensive Addiction Recovery Act, also known as CARA, which was signed into law just over a week ago.

While the bill will supply grants to communities, it is up to those communities to decide how to put that money to use.

“There’s going to be lots of opportunities under that bill for cities and counties and public subdivisions, public health units to really access federal dollars so we’re going to talk about a plan and make sure those plans are competitive for grants,” says Senator Heidi Heitkamp.

Heitkamp says the over-prescribing of opiates is just one part of the issue that needs to be tackled right away.

She also commended Fargo Police Chief Dave Todd and the rest of the department in the efforts made so far to fight this crisis.
