White Earth Tribal and Community College Celebrates Remodel Wrap-Up

Just down the road from Detroit Lakes, the White Earth Tribal and Community College opens a new wing in time for the school year.

The school in Mahnomen has been rebuilding for the last five years, and this is the final step in the remodel.

The new wing includes a library, class rooms and administrative offices.

Previously, staff were spread out over five buildings.

Among the staff is 76 year old Jeanne McDougall, who just graduated in the spring.

“Mahnomen, you know it’s a small town on a Indian reservation and I don’t think many people realize there’s this jewel of a college here,” said recent graduate Jeanne McDougall.

“One of my first classes was taught in the Red Apple-an eating establishment. We didn’t have any teaching tools. We had no wipe boards, no computers, no blackboards so for us to be coming into this facility is amazing,” said Academic Dean Sheila Michaels.

The college is open to all people, native or non-native.

Classes start August  29th.
