Senator Franken Demands Answers on Russia from FBI Director Comey
The FBI is investigating the possibility of contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia
WASHINGTON D.C. — The head of the FBI says Russia is still involved in American politics and Minnesota Senator Franken wants answers.
During questioning by the Senate Judiciary Committee, FBI Director James Comey agreed that Russia provides safe haven for cyber criminals.
The FBI is investigating the possibility of contacts between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Comey also says Russia is responsible for hacking the Democratic National Committee.
“What I want to know is why they favored President Trump,” said Sen. Franken. “And, it seems to me that, in order to answer that question, any investigation into whether the Trump campaign or Trump operation colluded with Russian operatives would require a full appreciation of the president’s financial dealings. Director Comey, would President Trump’s tax returns be material to such an investigation?”
“That’s not something, senator, I’m going to answer,” replied Comey.
“Does the investigation have access to President Trump’s tax returns?” asked Sen. Franken.
“I have to give you the same answer,” replied Comey. “I hope people don’t over-interpret my answers, but I just don’t want to start talking about anything, what we’re looking at and how.”
Comey said he’d felt “slightly nauseous” to think that he might have tipped the election outcome but in hindsight would change nothing.
