Longfellow Elementary Students Create Handmade Thank You Cards for Veterans
This is the seventh year where first grade students from Longfellow will personally deliver thank you cards to veterans at the VA Hospital
FARGO, N.D. — Students at a Fargo elementary school are creating handmade thank–you cards for veterans at the Fargo VA Hospital.
It’s been a Veterans’ Day tradition at Longfellow Elementary for years.
Veterans’ Day is Saturday and the first grade students at Longfellow Elementary want to let the veterans at the VA Hospital feel appreciated.
“Veterans are an important part of our society, and so with Veterans’ Day coming up, we talk about who is a veteran and why they’re important and how they’ve helped us,” said Sally Hamilton, first grade teacher at Longfellow Elementary.
The students learned about the history of Veterans’ Day and how members of the Armed Forces serve the country.
“I think it gives them a good idea of who a veteran is and what kinds of things they go through and it’s an experience that they will remember instead of just talking about it,” said Hamilton.
After decorating their cards on Tuesday, Ms. Hamilton’s class will show their appreciation in person by taking their cards to the veterans at Fargo’s VA Hospital.
The students were excited to read their cards and say thanks to the veterans.
“Dear Veterans, Thank you for keeping our country safe,” said Gabby, a first grade student at Longfellow.
“Dear Veterans, Thank you for keeping our world safe,” said Else, a first grade student at Longfellow.
Their teachers hope the event will leave a lasting impression on their students.
“Hopefully some of them will become veterans and appreciate soldiers who fought for us,” said Hamilton.
