West Fargo Police give out ice cream citations to kids wearing helmets
If caught wearing a safety helmet while riding a bicycle, kids will receive a free ice cream coupon.
WEST FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Children in West Fargo may have to think twice before heading out the door to ride their bikes.
West Fargo Police will be patrolling the streets and handing out citations to kids, but the citations aren’t what you may think.
If caught wearing a safety helmet while riding a bicycle, kids will get a coupon in exchange for a free ice cream cone to be redeemed at a local Dairy Queen.
The program is a partnership with AAA”s “I Got Caught” program.
“We just want to encourage kids to be safe this summer. We want everyone to have a long, warm and very safe summer, no injuries. So, we’re encouraging them to wear their helmets just to make sure that they do have fun and they’re acting safe, so if something does happen they are protected, so that they can enjoy the rest of the summer,” West Fargo Police Department’s Assistant Chief, Jerry Boyer said.
The “I Got Caught” program will run throughout the summer.
