GRAND FORKS — An inmate had to be taken to the hospital and fire investigators are trying to figure out what happened in a fire in the laundry room at the jail in Grand Forks overnight.

It’s the second fire in the laundry room in less than a month.

Firefighters responded to the fire just after 2 a.m. Tuesday in the laundry room at the Grand Forks County Correctional Center at 1701 North Washington Street.

Fire crews got there to be told by jail employees they’d discovered smoke and flames in the laundry room.

They found clothes in the dryer had caught fire, setting off the sprinkler system.

Firefighters put the fire out and cleared the smoke from the building.

One inmate was transported to Altru Hospital with unknown injuries.

The cause of the fire is undetermined.
