LIVE: Rescue Road Trip

FARGO — Some rescue pets from the Turtle Mountain tribal area near Rolla, North Dakota are getting the road trip of a lifetime.

They’re bound for new “furever” homes on the East Coast — but first, they stopped by the Morning Show for a visit.

Keith Benning, who’s a deputy sheriff and municipal judge in that part of the state, is one of the Turtle Mountain Animal Rescue’s founders.

Benning’s created a nationwide following for the rescue online, thanks to its social media presence.

Now, people from all over the country are applying to adopt the animals.

Benning says the long ride’s already been an eventful one.

A pregnant dog suddenly went into labor mid-ride, giving birth to nine healthy puppies.

The puppy on Keith’s lap isn’t one of them.

She’s 10-week-old Kanny.

She’s going to her new home in New England, along with another puppy and a TMAR cat.

Benning says thanks to a grant from Pedigree, the dog food company, travel expenses to get the animals to their new homes are covered.

However, they need help raising funds to build a permanent facility for the animals, and for their ongoing care.
