LIVE: Don’t Be Scared to Get Creative

DETROIT LAKES, Minn. — If you’re not a skilled artist, it can be a little scary to think about creating a Halloween painting of your own.

But there’s a new workshop underway that helps even a novice painter bring their creativity into full fall color.

Emma Tomb (yes, that’s her real name) is teaching a “Spooky Painting workshop at the historic Holmes Theatre in Detroit Lakes.

Fear not, even if you’re a beginning painter, Tomb says, you can pull it off.

Each student starts with an old or thrifted painting you don’t mind altering.

Tomb teaches them how to shade the scene to make it a moody twilight or evening setting, add fall color to the landscape, and add figures like ghosts, witches, bats and pumpkins.

It gives new painters a leg up since they don’t need to create the entire scene from scratch.

And as a bonus, it’s sustainable, since it upcycles old paintings that often sit neglected at thrift stores.

Tomb joined the Morning Show for a live interview and a quick lesson in getting started, although her classes run about two hours long in order to complete a painting.
