LIVE: Emotional Support Animals

MOORHEAD — They can make our lives a lot more fun.

But for some people, they’re a matter of survival.

And there are a lot of myths about emotional support animals, so city leaders and accessibility advocates are trying to help.

The city’s Leann Wallin and accessibility specialist Jennifer Erickson put together a “Lunch and Learn” event for landlords, renters, property managers, and service providers to get people up to speed on what an ESA actually is.

They’re not like service animals, which are highly trained.

Instead, they are animals that are well-socialized and neither dangerous nor destructive, and which provide help with people who suffer from emotional disabilities, acting as companions and helping them stabilize their symptoms.

The event is part of a broader effort to make sure people can keep their housing in Moorhead, said Wallin.

That’s because sometimes landlords don’t know what to ask for in terms of documentation, nor do renters know what it takes to get approval.

Wallin and Erickson joined the Morning Show to talk about the event and the ongoing efforts by the Successful Outcomes for Tenants and Landlords group to preserve accessibility and housing in the city.
