Native American Education Program Winter Gathering Brings Community Together

Organizers say it's one of the largest such events in the F-M area and is a great opportunity to strengthen bonds.

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) —  The Native American Education Winter Gathering took place at Discovery Middle School from 6-8 P.M. on Dec. 18th.

There was food, a photo booth by Dreamcatcher Photography, face painting, a rotation of other activity stations, games, and music by DJ Birdman.

Santa Claus even dropped by to hand out candy bags and take some photos with the children afterwards.

Event organizers say this is one of their biggest opportunities to build a sense of community between Native peoples in the area.

“We have so many schools within Fargo, West Fargo. About 50 schools,” explained Melody Staebner, Native American Education Coordinator for Fargo Public Schools. “Sometimes our families can feel like, ‘are there other natives in the community?’ They can feel a little bit isolated. So, when we provide opportunities like tonight, it brings us all together.”

Past gatherings have seen over 300 people in attendance – but organizers estimate they comfortably cleared that number this time around.
