“Battle of the Buns” Combines Cooking and Musical Competition
The event, put on by the non-profit Love Your Buns, aims to raise awareness regarding colon cancer.
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – While there were many kinds of cakes and pies available for consumption, the 4th annual Battle of the Buns also featured some rockin’ competition.
“First year we had just the battle of the bands, second and third years we had baking competitions,” explained Jarod DCamp, executive director of Love Your Buns.
“So, bringing it all together, synergy tonight.”
The event was organized by Love Your Buns, a non-profit started by Sara DCamp back when she was diagnosed with rectal cancer.
Sadly, that would take her life in 20-21.
But her husband, Jarod, wasn’t about to let her advocacy efforts fade away.
“It’s always a little emotional for us because my wife Sara set up this organization and I was her helper for a long time. I had to carry on her legacy,” he explained.
Sanford’s Brian Shawn was in attendance as a judge for the sweet and savory treats being presented – and as someone with a personal relationship to the topic at hand.
“As a four-year colon cancer survivor myself, it’s great to come out here and bring awareness to colon cancer,” he said.
He adds that awareness spread by this event is absolutely vital.
“It’s critically important that you catch colon cancer at an early stage,” he said.
“If you catch it in an early stage, there’s a good chance that you can beat it and do the treatment that’s necessary. But if you catch it in a later stage, that’s when it gets a bit more challenging.”
