Battling Back-to-School Stress with Essentia Health
FARGO — Back to school season is starting soon, and you think the school supply shopping list is stressful… it might be nothing compared to how stressed your kid is feeling.
That’s partly because children are facing a lot of pressure to perform academically at earlier and earlier ages than ever before, say child mental health experts.
Children who may be struggling academically often experience anxiety over the start of the new school year.
They can also be worried about whether their new teachers will like them or whether they’ll make friends in their new class.
Experts say it’s important for parents to talk with their kids about their feelings about school, and to validate that it’s okay to be sad about summer ending, or to have mixed feelings about the return to the classroom.
Essentia Health’s Dr. Alexandra Kohlhase joined the Morning Show to explain the best way to open up a dialogue about the start of the school year with your child, and what to look for in terms of signs that your child may be suffering anxiety.
