“Hazel”: From the Prairie to the Silver Screen
BISMARCK, N.D. — She’s one of the best-known heroines of the North Dakota prairie.
And now, a teenager who died saving her younger sisters from a sudden blizzard in 1920 is the subject of a new feature film produced right here in North Dakota.
Its writer and director shot the entirety of it near Bismarck.
He says while much of the main cast auditioned in Los Angeles and other major metropolitan area, the rest of the film relied a great deal on the efforts of the local community.
That included a donated building for them to build sets and create the blizzard effect, and local talent which worked as part of the crew and as extras.
Filmmaker Daniel Bielinski joined the Morning Show to talk about where the inspiration to create the film “Hazel” came from, the other young stars of the film, and what it’s like making a movie out on the North Dakota prairie.
