FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – Mother’s Day is generally focused on praising our human mothers – but the Red River Zoo wanted to make sure we didn’t forget about animal mothers as well.

The zoo celebrated Mother’s Day by giving free admission to all mothers.

Families poured into the zoo en masse, taking advantage of the great weather and the family-friendly programming.

Zoo staff said the day was the perfect combination of celebrating both their animals and their patrons.

“We have our red pandas, they’re kind of our tried and true,” explained Paige Tetzloff, education manager for the zoo.

“We always think of them when we think of mothers, because we’ve had many red panda babies born here at the Red River Zoo over the years. At one point, about a quarter of the red pandas in the AZA accredited zoos were born here.”

“Families are kind of at the center of what we do here at the zoo – the work we do and the education we offer – so having a reason to bring your family to the zoo, especially on such a beautiful sunny day, I’m just overwhelmed with joy,” Tetzloff added.

“It’s so fun to see everyone out here.”

Fathers, never fear – the zoo will be running a similar promotion for Father’s Day in June.
