ASHLEY, N.D. (KVRR-KFGO) – Attempted murder charges have been filed against a Seattle man who’s accused of shooting McIntosh County Sheriff Steve Delzer in the hand during an exchange of gunfire southwest of Kulm.

Twenty-six-year-old Elkin Gomez also faces charges in Lamoure County of felony assault for hitting a McIntosh County deputy in the head with a tire jack.

The third charge is reckless endangerment for firing several shots at officers.

Lamoure County Sheriff Bob Fernandez says while the school in Kulm was placed in a brief lockdown, he doesn’t believe students or faculty were in danger.

The shooting happened Thursday morning on State Highway 13.

Delzer says he and the deputy who was shot are on standard administrative leave.

Gomez is in the Stutsman County jail in Jamestown.
