Fargo Police release details into the arrest of 22-year-old Jayvon Allen

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) — Months after the initial arrest of a suspect related to the fatal shooting in downtown Fargo in August, police have taken into custody another suspect.

“We were able to identify Jayvon Allen as a new suspect. After consultation with the state’s attorney’s office, a decision was made in April to move forward with charges for Mr. Allen for the murder of Azeem Holmes as well as aggravated assault and reckless endangerment due to his role in injuring two additional individuals and firing a weapon into a crowd outside the bar,” said Capt. Matt Christensen, Criminal Investigations Division.

Allen was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service North Star Task Force in Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon. Christensen said the warrant was issued at the end of April, but this information was not initially made public, compared to the first arrest of Tyrque Jones.

“The reason I think he didn’t think we were looking for him is because it wasn’t publicly out there that we were seeking him. Just like we did in the first one, obviously, that was very public that we were looking for him, which is why we didn’t want to do it this time because we felt like if we did that, then he would definitely know. Whereas now he might think I might be getting away with this, and they don’t have me as a suspect,” said Christensen.

One pressing question that was asked of Christensen was whether the police believe Allen is the right suspect. Tyrque Jones was the first suspect in the case, but charges were soon dropped.

“The arrest is based on probable cause on the information that we have available at this time. Investigation is going to continue, which is again why we plead for people to come forward with information. I feel confident in the work of our detectives, they’ve done excellent work in this case, but that will get played out through the court and make sure that the evidence we have is accurate and correct,” said Christensen.

Allen is being held in jail in Minneapolis and will eventually be extradited to the Cass County Jail.

Investigation remains ongoing.
