Parents of student who brought THC-laced candy to Moorhead school charged with felonies

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) — Investigations are ongoing into what led twelve students at Horizon Middle School to become ill after they consumed what was described as candy.
“School staff and emergency responders responded quickly to provide care. During the follow-up investigation, officers executed a search warrant in the 1100 block of 101/2 Street North of Moorhead. During the search, investigators found, recovered, prohibited amounts of suspected THC products in the form of flower, cartridges, and wax, along with psychedelic mushrooms and large amounts of cash,” said Chris Helmick, Moorhead Police Chief.
Forty-year-old Martin Hulst and 43-year-old Amanda Hulst were identified as the parents of the juvenile that brought the “candy” to the school and were identified suspects. Both are charged with Felony 1st Degree Controlled Substance.
“That’s the unfortunate part of this, whether it’s THC or alcohol or whatever it is, it’s too freely available. It really is. And kids can get access to these things,” said Helmick.
Students involved were initially not cooperating with the investigation, but Helmick said some parents have begun to cooperate.
“That side of the building has over 1400 kids in it. And to say that its now been confined to 12, I’d say we’ve done a pretty good job with that. Am I happy that the event took place? I am not happy that the event took place. Am I happy with how we responded? I am,” said Dr. Brandon Lunak, Superintendent, Moorhead Public Schools.
Police have not confirmed what form of “candy” was handed out. But Lunak wants parents to have conversations with their children about situations like this one.
“Continue to be involved in your child’s life. Continue to have those conversations with them because even though they’re 14,15,11,12, seniors in high school, a conversation from a trusted adult is good at any age,” said Lunak.
Helmick says several of the students involved have been confirmed to be doing fine. And the investigation remains open.
