ND Election officials give public demonstration on how state’s voting machines keep votes secure

FARGO (KVRR) — People in Fargo get a chance to see how the state’s voting machines work, and the security behind them, in a public demonstration.
Those in attendance got to see the DS200 vote tabulators in action, learn how they are tested for accuracy, and see the tabulation process.
During the demonstration, the public was informed that the tabulators do not connect to the internet, and USB ports on the machine are covered by a locked panel.
They also demonstrated how the tabulators accept votes, count them, and print out totals on receipt paper. Those numbers are then checked to make sure the machines are counting votes accurately.
They also learned about the chain of custody votes go through to keep them safe from tampering.
“Our equipment is tested. It’s tested thoroughly to ensure the safety of your vote and the accuracy of it,” said Cass County Finance Director Sarah Heinle. “(T)hat is the biggest takeaway, and that’s what this test is showing people. We welcome any member of the public to come out and witness it. We want you to know that your votes are being counted correctly and accurately.”
Early voting begins on June 2. Election day for the primary is June 9.
