People in Moorhead Fight to Keep Human Rights Commission Going
The Moorhead Human Rights Commission is fighting back after the city threatened to cut the board.
During Monday’s city council meeting, both parties did come to an agreement that changes need to be made, but are still working to find out what those will be.
The board’s mission since its start back in 80’s has been to help fight discrimination.
Mara Morken of the Human Rights Commission says during the last couple of years, there has been confusion on both ends on what exactly the roles and functions of the commission are.
“We need to hear from the community, we need to hear from more from the people, representing protected classes, and there needs to be more of a dialogue so in the end last night. I think the really beautiful part the city council came to understand that this is necessary,” said Morken.
Morken says during the next few months, the city and the commission will be working closely, hoping to resolve the issue.
