Area students are taking their interests to the skies.

Fargo and West Fargo girls took part in the first Aviation Day which focuses on young women and the world of science.

KVRR’s Erin Lisch takes the tour into this special day.

Duct tape, cardboard boxes and young girls’ strategic thinking create a Vortex Cannon producing enough wind to knock over a stack of cups.

“It was really frustrating at first but once we got the hang of it and with my partners help we were able to get it from across the room and so it was, really rewarding at the end.”

Activities like this were led by NDSCS professors to spark the girls’ interest in science.

“We thought it’d be a prime opportunity for us to target a very exciting field. Which we expect turn over employment opportunities to girls in this area that is predominately male.”

The students are also learning a little bit more about potential aviation careers.

The group of 14 girls, got the opportunity to tour the Fargo Jet Center.
One girl says she’s ready to get into the field.

“It’s really cool to come over here and like get a look at it, just to kind of see the business side of it cause not everyone in aviation is a pilot.”

And these girls are ready to break the perception….making aviation a girl’s world too.  Erin Lisch KVRR News.

Along with touring the Jet Center, the students were able to take a peek into the air control tower at the Hector Airport.
