Remembering Mayville’s #88
19 Year Old Tight End Dies
Just celebrating his birthday last week, Mayville State’s Tight End Matt Holland died suddenly Saturday morning after an episode of seizures.
Mayville State’s football coach said Holland was supposed to go to a class on Friday but ended up sending an email saying he was feeling absolutely terrible.
Heading to the Emergency Room Friday, he returned home after receiving medicine.
His roommates that also play on the team found him yesterday morning in his room unresponsive.
Head Football Coach John Haines said, “He was going to get on the field for us, and play a lot this upcoming season, and he was very excited. I think he had a bright future as a football player but we lost more than a football player, we lost a great person.”
People in his hometown of Barnesville are pouring out their hearts across social media after the passing of Holland. They have started a hastag, Barnesville-strong.
At Mayville State athletes say they are shocked and expressing sympathies.
MSU’s baseball player Christian Berry said, “It’s such a devastating thing to go through for not only the teammates and his friends but the whole school itself and the community.”
It’s still unclear if he had a history of these seizures.Holland had no head injuries this past football season.
Also known as “Thor”, Coach Haines said Holland could always make a person smile.
They plan on framing his jersey so he will always be remembered.
