Minnesota DNR Reminds You To Clean Up Your Trash While In Lakes Country

Nice weekends take quite a toll on Detroit Lakes.

The Department of Natural Resources says after holidays there is usually always trash left in the water.

Cups and cans are found the most.

Trash that washes up appears to be from intentional littering by people.

Conservation officers want to remind Detroit Lake visitors that littering can result in punishment by law.

“To boaters, to people out on the public water, if you’re gonna take items out onto the water be it food, drink, that type of thing, that you are disposing of your litter in the appropriate manner. There is also the ability for us to take enforcement action for litter if we do see it,” says Conservation Officer Angela Warren.

In Minnesota, the penalty for littering is a citation starting at $400.

You also have the possibility of imprisonment or being court ordered to clean up for four to eight hours.
