Impact Of Wet Spell Easily Absorbed
The entire region has been soaked by rain the last few days, but for the most part, the water has been welcomed.
NDSU Extension meteorologist Daryl Ritchison says most of the region has gotten two to four inches of rain in the last handful of days.
A few isolated areas have been hit harder.
But there haven’t been many issues.
A dry winter and spring means the ground was able to soak up nearly all the water.
If we had a wetter winter, the recent rains would have caused much more damage.
Ritchison says, “Because we were so dry this time we were able to handle it. So often in the last 20 years, this amount of rain, the Red River would go above flood stage, matter of fact might go up to 22, 3, 4, 5 feet, very noticeable above flood stage. The fields would start to drown.”
Ritchison says the rain could cause some fungal growth among crops.
