Schafer Preparing for Potentially Painful Budget Cuts at UND

Interim UND president Ed Schafer says some tough decisions are coming soon for the university amid statewide budget cuts.

Current Governor Jack Dalrymple ordered all state agencies to trim their budgets by four percent, which means Schafer must find more than $12.5 million to cut.

Schafer says he wants to focus funding on successful programs at the university.

That means some programs, and jobs associated with them, could be gone.

“Programs are gonna be impacted”, Schafer says. “Individuals are gonna be impacted. We know that. It’s difficult. It’s tough. We’re gonna do it in the best manner we can. We’re gonna do it humanely and friendly, and realize we’re impacting people’s lives.”

Officials in each department are preparing budget proposals to deal with the cuts.

Schafer will make final decisions in mid-April.
