YMCA Lends Helping Hand to Parents Attending Moszer Service

During Officer Moszer’s funeral, the YMCA hosted free childcare for attendees.

In times like these the littlest gesture goes a long way, and one parent I spoke to says it meant just that.

For Georgeanna Nefzger, dropping off her son as she prepares to pay her respects to Officer Moszer means more than just free child care.

“This is really an amazing time for them to step up and really help the community it’s something that has hit close home for lots of people,” said Georgeanna.

Georgeanna currently lives in Moorhead, but is originally from Mahnomen County where just six years ago, Mahnomen County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Dewey was also killed in the line of duty.

“The law enforcement community here was very supportive when we lost an officer several years ago, so for me this is an opportunity to give back that respect and appreciation for them,” said Georgeanna.

The YMCA allowed her to do that without the worry of childcare.

“In times of tragedy the Y is there for our community, and we wanted to make sure that during this very difficult time that everyone feels cared for,” said Lorrie Thoermke of the YMCA.

Lorrie says for parents dealing with the loss, it’s a way they hope to help shed light on the situation.

“I think it’s important to have something positive for them to do at this time, and the children will be doing something positive. Although, I think they know what a difficult time their parents are going through at this time,” said Lorrie.

As for Georgeanna, she says she planned on taking her son to the see the procession so he too can pay his respects.

“He probably won’t remember, because he’s only two, but I think it will probably make an impact today,” said Georgeanna.

The YMCA had 17 volunteers that helped with the free childcare service, and at least a dozen children that were dropped off during the funeral service.
