No Charges for Guard in Stun Gun Incident and Deputy Shooting
No charges will be filed against a hospital security guard who used a stun gun against a patient who killed a sheriff’s deputy.
The Stearns County Attorney’s office says the security officer’s actions were justified.
The guard at St. Cloud Hospital used a stun gun to incapacitate the patient, 50-year-old Danny Hammond, after Hammond snatched Aitkin County Deputy Steven Sandberg’s gun and fatally shot him.
The report says the stun gun probably sent Hammond into cardiac arrest. Despite immediate medical attention, Hammond died.
He was in the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt.
Authorities say Hammond had kidnapped and terrorized his wife.
Sandberg was a graduate of MSUM and played on the college’s football team.
