Special Session Begins And Gov. Burgum Asks for More Income Tax Relief
BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) – A special session of the North Dakota Legislature is underway to fix a budget bill problem and Gov. Doug Burgum wants an additional $91 million in income tax relief.
He is also asking for increased spending on infrastructure and destination grants.
The session was called due to the state Supreme Court finding the Office of Management and Budget bill unconstitutional due to it violation of the one subject per bill rule.
It has typically been used as a catchall or cleanup bill.
Burgum wants to raise the income threshold for the zero percent tax bracket as well as use more money for roads and bridges.
State Representative Mike Lefor, a Republican from Dickinson, said, “So I think we need to send a strong message to the citizens of North Dakota. That they work hard for the money and we need to send some of those dollars back again. The state’s largest income tax reduction in history and now we want to make that even more.”
The legislature plans to continue discussions on the bills over the next few days.
