People of Fargo vote on the future of Fargodome
FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – The quarter – cent sales tax increase and 3% lodging tax hike would fund the proposed multi-million dollar expansion to the dome.
“You know it’s tough because everything is in paper today but I do know that we’re into our fourth box of ballets so we’re over the 4,000 mark”, says Inspector at the Ramada Inn polling location Carrie Clemens.
“We’re Probably at over 1,000 voters now just on the volume we’ve seen,” said Inspector at the Fargodome polling location Shanon Rieman.
Plans include a 90 thousand square foot conference center, more bathrooms, and a parking lot redesign.
The project being named Fargodome Reimagined will cost an estimated 140 million dollars with 30 million coming from the Dome.
Both taxes would be in effect for twenty years if they are passed and would take effect in April.
It would bring the Fargo sales tax to 7.75 percent and the city lodging tax to 13.75 percent.
The economic impact ranges from $24 million to $42 million per year depending on the events hosted year to year.
Clemens also said, “It’s been really great to see the turn out of everything today.”
Voters initially approved a half-cent sales tax to fund Fargodome back in 1988. It opened in late 1992.
