Vietnam veteran laid to rest at Fargo National Cemetery

FARGO, N.D. (KVRR) – With snow falling and the wind blowing, people gathered at the Fargo National Cemetery for a veteran’s burial. Merle Schrank was buried with full military honors while numerous veterans and community members made their way out there and braved the elements.

“I am always in shock to see so many people come out for unclaimed veterans, especially on these cold, chilly North Dakota weather days,” said Jennifer Lieder, the manager at the Fargo National Cemetery. “But then I think, well this community is pretty awesome and I shouldn’t be too surprised.”

The keyword there is unclaimed. Which meant this Vietnam veteran had no family after his death, but people showed up to be there for him.

“Just having people show up from the community say farewell and be part of the family for this veteran. It’s just such an honor to be part of.” said Lieder.

Schrank died on December 8 at the North Dakota Veterans Administration Hospital in Fargo. This was the first ceremony at the cemetery for 2024.

Jennifer Lieder, who is the manager at the cemetery, shared what it means to be a part of this process and see these veterans be honored.

“There’s no words to describe it. It’s just an honor,” said Lieder. “It’s an honor to serve the families, especially in the most trying time in grieving. It’s an honor. It brings tears to my eyes.”
